CANCER MARKERS

Early Detection and Screening

One of the primary values of cancer markers and blood tests is their ability to aid in the early detection of cancer. Detecting cancer at an early stage significantly improves the chances of successful treatment and survival. For example, the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test is commonly used to screen for prostate cancer. Elevated levels of PSA can indicate the presence of prostate cancer or other prostate conditions.

Diagnostic Accuracy

Cancer blood tests can help in the diagnosis of cancer by providing additional information that complements imaging and biopsy results. Certain markers are associated with specific types of cancer, which can help in identifying the cancer’s origin. For instance, CA-125 is a marker often elevated in ovarian cancer, while CA 19-9 is associated with pancreatic cancer. These markers can guide clinicians in diagnosing the type and origin of the cancer, especially in cases where the primary site is unclear.
