It is easy to assume that falling outside the numbers printed on the page signals an immediate health crisis. In reality, laboratory reference ranges are statistical tools—not rigid boundaries between perfect health and illness.

How Labs Calculate the “Normal” Range

A reference range is established by testing a large sample of apparently healthy individuals. Because human biology varies widely, laboratories rely on statistics rather than absolute thresholds.
